Turku Music Centre Fuuga Opens
28.10.2026
Fuuga opened to the public on 26 October 2026 in Turku, Finland. The acoustics had already received widespread praise before the opening!
Praise for the Acoustics
Although the building has only just opened and acoustic testing and fine-tuning are still under way, the acoustics of both the main hall and the smaller Ateljee Hall have already received widespread praise.
The main user of the building is the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. In its social media posts, the orchestra has highlighted how even the softest pianissimo can now fill the entire hall.

The smaller Ateljee Hall serves both as a performance venue and as a rehearsal space for the orchestra. Its acoustic design has also been particularly demanding, as the hall needs to provide excellent acoustic working conditions for orchestral rehearsals while also functioning as a high-quality performance space.
The acoustic design of Fuuga was carried out by Akukon in collaboration with Kahle Acoustics. Professor Tapio Lokki of Aalto University acted as an expert adviser to the users. Sara Vehviläinen and Perttu Laukkanen were the lead acousticians on the Akukon team. Lauri Vikström has been involved, particularly during the implementation phase, in ensuring that the building aligns with the acoustic designs. The contributions of many other Akukon experts are also visible—and, above all, audible—in the final result.

Performance Technology Plays a Key Role
Performance technology and stage engineering play an essential role in music venues. They ensure that performances can be seen and enable lighting and visual elements to be used as an integral part of the production.
High-quality sound reinforcement is also essential. Amplification is not generally used in classical music concerts, but speech, such as artist introductions and announcements, still needs to be heard clearly. Fuuga will also host a wide variety of performances beyond acoustic orchestral music. Popular music concerts and other public events require sound reinforcement.
Akukon’s Tapio Ilomäki has served as Project Manager for the performance technology design, while Toni Silvola has been responsible for the stage engineering design.
